My Floral Journey
My Floral Journey
I was born in Jersey and I've always loved nature and the beauty of flowers. The first 'arrangement' I ever made was to place home grown purple Statice into a small black lid with plasticine which I placed on the grand piano in my doll’s house!
Over the years I created various designs for myself and friends. Not until I married in 1997 did I learn about flower arranging classes. I took an evening class where I met ladies from a NAFAS Flower Club in the Island. I too joined the Club and met many 'flower friends'. They involved members in larger projects, encouraged us to take part in competition, especially in the Jersey Eisteddfod, held annually in March.
I took a 3-year Flower Arranging Diploma Course which went to the history of floral design and the Principles and Elements of Design. Gathering inspiration from art, home design and everyday objects, all the time stretching my imagination and utilising my eclectic taste.
In recent years I looked for more art and design-based courses and found them at the wonderful Academy of Flowers in Covent Garden owned and run by Jillian Wheeler. I've taken various courses with them and they gave me the confidence to go further.
I love oriental design and I believe that is why I love 'contemporary' and 'modern' designs which use plant material in a different way.
In 2013 I finally took the plunge and registered as a sole trader so that I can work as a part time, freelance floral designer. I've designed for corporate events and weddings as well as the smallest floral gifts. Working closely with my clients helps me to 'feel' what is right for their needs!
