My Floral Journey
I'm Jersey born with a love of nature and the beauty of flowers and foliage.
My first 'arrangement' was placed on the grand piano in the doll's house my Mother made for me. It was home-grown purple Statice stuck into a small black lid with plasticine!
Over the years, I created various designs for myself and friends. When I married in 1997, I leant about flower arranging classes. I took an evening class where I met ladies from a NAFAS Flower Club in the Island. I joined the Club and met many 'flower friends'. They involved members in larger projects, encouraged us to take part in competitions, especially in the Floral Art Section of the Jersey Eisteddfod, held annually in March. In latter years, we've also joined other NAFAS member volunteers to decorate Salisbury and Winchester Cathedrals for their Floral Festivals - a scale we cannot imagine on Island.
I took a 3-year Flower Arranging Diploma Course, which went to the history of floral design and the Principles and Elements of Design. Gathering inspiration from art, home design and, everyday objects, all the time stretching my imagination and utilising my eclectic taste.
In recent years I attended more art and design-based courses at the Academy of Flowers in Covent Garden owned and run by Jillian Wheeler. and The Cambridge Flower School. Taking these classes gave me the confidence to go further. These days there are so many Online Courses and I've signed up for several of them - leaning new and exciting techniques.
I love oriental design and believe that's where my love of 'contemporary' and 'modern' design stems from. It uses plant material in a different way to traditional floral design.
In 2013 I finally took the plunge and registered as a sole trader so that I can work as a part time, freelance floral designer. I've designed for corporate events and weddings as well as the smallest floral gifts. Working closely with my clients helps me to 'feel' what is right for their needs!
